Media and its impact on secondary victimization and victim blaming of the victims of sexual violence and harassment

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the news media and the way they cover the acts of sexual violence and harassment and its victims. The aim is to describe how Czech media contribute to the secondary victimization of the victims and to so-called victim blaming, which is an accusation that the victim is to blame for the act committed. The theoretical part explains the context and concepts related to crime victims, which are important for understanding the practical part. It defines sexual violence, explains the term victimization and the types of victimization, as well as the phenomenon of victim blaming and rape culture, whose existence is often supported by the news media. The thesis is also devoted to media framing and journalistic ethics regarding the coverage of crimes and crime victims. In the practical part, the thesis explores articles published from January to April 2022 in selected Czech online media - both serious and tabloid - in which the media refer to the victims of sexual violence and harassment. It observes how the media informed the public about the victims and how it contributed to the secondary victimization and victim blaming by using certain controversial words and phrases.

THE CRIME OF RAPE - CRIMINAL AND CRIMINOLOGICAL ASPECTS The thesis is composed of six chapters and is focused on criminal and criminological aspects of the crime of rape. I decided to write about this topic especially because of severity of the consequences caused by this crime to the victim and because of the dangerousness of the offender. Chapter One is subdivided into six parts and it contains the introduction to the topic, in particular the outline of the historical development in this area and analysis of the current legislation with focus on terms which could be difficult to interpret. This chapter ends with presentation of static data regarding to the crime of rape and their graphical representation. Next chapter consists of three parts and is focused on the offender of the crime of rape, particularly on his personality, typology and prediction of his future development. Following part of the thesis is subdivided into five parts. Rights of the victims of crimes and options of their employment during the criminal proceedings Abstract This master's thesis inquires into crime victims' rights, their status in the criminal proceedings and actual employability of their guaranteed rights. It contains a brief history of development of the legislative concerning the topic. My thesis comes to a conclusion that especially in the last fifty years, the status and range of crime victims' rights has been constantly improving. Crime victim is becoming less and less just a bearer of evidence of the crime and is more and more becoming an active subject of the criminal proceedings, on which they also have their interest. With the passing of the new Crime Victims' Rights Act, the Czech legal system was enriched by a wide array of victims' rights that provides special care and approach from the state and its authorities. Secondary Victimization of Victims by Criminal Proceedings Abstract The submitted diploma thesis deals with the issue of secondary victimization in the context of criminal proceedings. The main goal of this work is to evaluate whether effective legislation provides victims with protection against secondary harm. Based on the theoretical basis of the issue of secondary victimization, the thesis also focuses on finding out whether the legislation adequately reflects the current victimological and psychological knowledge in the field of secondary victimization and secondary harm. The work is divided into three chapters. The first part deals with the basic conceptual issues of secondary victimization in a broader context. Emphasis is placed on the transformation of the victim's position in criminal proceedings within the historical development of victimology as an independent field. The terminological and interpretive shortcomings of the concept of victimization are also emphasized. The second chapter discusses secondary victimization as a victimological phenomenon. Secondary victimization of victims of sexual crimes by law enforcement authorities Abstract Although victims of crime received more attention in recent years than ever before, there are lots of myths about them in our society. These myths distort the view not only of the victims themselves, but of moral crimes in general and subsequently they have influence as to how victims are treated. A victim who reports a sexually motivated crime has to face stressful and confusing criminal proceedings. During the proceedings victims are usually forced to testify repeatedly, meet the perpetrator, respond to hurtful questions about their past, their relationship with the perpetrator and justify their behaviour during primary victimization. All of these uncomfortable experiences are the causes of secondary victimization by law enforcement authorities. The main aim of this thesis was to analyze criminal proceedings from the perspective of victims and focus on dangerous situations during which law enforcement authorities can cause secondary victimization to them. The crimes against human dignity in sexual area - criminal and criminological aspects Abstract: The thesis deals with those crimes that affect the most intimate area of human life, the sexual area. It analyzes those crimes from a criminal point of view and compares the current Czech legislation with the legislation in Spain. Based on this comparison, the thesis contains several considerations de lege ferenda, which could improve the current Czech legislation. As the chosen topic is strongly affected by forensic science and criminology, the thesis also deals with sexual crimes from the point of view of these scientific disciplines. From a criminological point of view, the thesis examines the personality of the perpetrator and the victim. With regard to perpetrators, it deals primarily with the motives, motivations and typology of perpetrators in general. Secondary victimization of victims of sexual offenses Abstract The submitted rigorous thesis on the topic of secondary victimization of victims of sexual offenses aims to acquaint its readers with the issue of secondary victimization, especially in relation to particularly vulnerable victims of sexual offenses. The thesis introduces the basic concepts important for the issue and then focuses on secondary methods of victimization of rape victims and child victims of sexual offenses, while also discussing specific options for preventing and alleviating secondary victimization of these victims. The thesis also contains a section devoted to opportunities to help these victims. The thesis is divided into an introduction, five chapters and a conclusion. In the introductory chapters of the thesis, there is a focus on the basic terms of victimology, as understanding these terms is necessary for further content of the thesis, such as victim, its legal regulation and the evolution of victims' rights in the Czech Republic, victimology, victimization and the division of individual types of victimization, harm and victimity. Social work in the context of domestic violence combined with mental illness

The diploma thesis follow up the possibilities of social work with survivor of domestic violence having mental illness. The theoretical part summarizes the current form of social work with the target group of clients by survivor of domestic violence and the target group of clients with mental illness. In the practical part is described the investigation of this issue, analyzed interviews with social workers and proposal of work methodology. In the final discussion, the results of the survey and the success of the proposed methodology are controversial.
Criminal, criminological and criminalistic aspects of injured person's interrogation

This thesis is dealing with the criminal interrogation of injured person from criminal, criminalistic and criminological aspect and emphasizes the issue of secondary victimization. It contains an examination of the terms injured person, victim of crime and criminal interrogation, then is dealing with methods and tactics of questioning with specific issues involved in injured person's matter. The thesis describes changes in Czech system of law caused by the Statute of victims of crime. On particular cases based on author's research the thesis shows how can wrongly managed questiong leads to secondary victimization of victim, and offers solutions of particular problems involved in criminal interrogation of injured person.
